Does ambient AI work for complex consults?
Ambient scribes look impressive in demos, but do they hold up when the consultation is complex and the doctor needs defensible notes?
Ambient scribes are compelling when the visit follows a simple arc. Neurology consults often do not. The patient may give a history, the spouse corrects it, old imaging changes the interpretation, and medication plans shift halfway through.
I would use AI drafting only if the review step is obvious. I need to see what became the note, what was omitted, and what I am signing.
I would not dismiss ambient AI. For some consultations, it captures the conversation better than I can while looking at the screen. That can improve patient interaction.
The risk is treating the first draft as the record. Any tool in this category needs a review habit, not just impressive summarisation.
In psychiatry, ambient recording changes the room. Patients may speak differently if they believe everything is being captured. Even if the technology works, consent and patient comfort are not minor operational details.
A tool like Microdoc feels easier to introduce when the workflow is more controlled and the doctor is deliberately creating the note.
We looked at ambient products alongside workflow-led documentation. The ambient products were impressive at creating first drafts, but our operational problem was not only first drafts.
We needed correction queues, letter production, doctor approval, and a clean handoff to admin. That is where Microdoc looked more practical for consultant outpatient work.
An ambient note might be good, but I still need to turn it into the right output. Is it a GP letter, an insurer letter, a chart note, or a task for follow-up?
Microdoc is stronger for my role when it starts with the output we actually need to finish.
For routine follow-up where the patient story is straightforward, ambient capture could be excellent. It may reduce keyboard time and preserve the consultation flow.
For complex cases, I would still rather dictate my assessment and plan clearly. Microdoc's value is that it helps that become a usable note and letter.
The governance test is simple: can we explain what was recorded, what was generated, what was edited, who edited it, and who signed it?
If a vendor cannot answer that cleanly, the product is not ready for our setting. Microdoc has an advantage if the workflow makes those stages visible.
